The Phantom Moves to Dynamite?
According to an article over at Newsarama publisher Dynamite Entertainment has secured the rights to producer their own series of Phantom comics. And, after reading the article, phans are not happy. According to Dynamite president, Nick Barrucci, Dynamites take on the character will act as a reboot of sorts. Barrucci says
Our take is going to be an interesting one – we are going to reboot it in such away where we will explain his costume – which will be tweaked – differently. Anyone who knows Alex [Ross] knows that his idea of tweaking involves taking the best of what is there, and make it contemporary while including those elements. I think, in broad strokes, how we see the character can be described in three sentences:
He will start in the jungle.
He will be ‘born’ in the jungle.
He will come to the concrete jungle of New York City....One of the things we felt with the Phantom is, you can only have so many adventures in the jungle. It’s about time we put him back in civilization, and we pit him against the animals of New York City.
This is what seems to be upsetting phans most, especially the moving to New York part.
Apparently Dynamite are planning on treating the character as they have done with other characters they have up-dated such as the Lone Ranger. As for who will be working on the series the only name reviled thus far is Alex Ross, who will most likely be doing issue covers and character design similar to his role on Project: Superpowers. Barrucci says
We are talking to someone who is on a similar level with Alex Ross – someone like a [Lone Ranger writer] Brett Matthews who can reinvent the character, who can not only take out the essence of the character while making him contemporary as well.
The article also brings up questions as to the future of Moonstone's current Phantom on-going series written by Mike Bullock. The following line has phans worrieing that Moonstone may have lost the Phantom license;
I don’t know all the particulars about whether or not the other publisher let go of the license, or how, but we were approached,” Barrucci tells Newsarama.
There has been no word from Moonstone as of yet on the matter but ChronicleChamber.com has contacted them in hopes of learning something. As soon as we do we will let you know.
